What Licenses Do I need to Record Microsoft Teams Calls?

The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of the licenses needed to record Microsoft Teams calls with CallCabinet.

There are Two Ways to Record Microsoft Teams Calls

It’s important to mention that CallCabinet can record Microsoft Teams calls through two different methods: Desktop Recording and Cloud-based Recording. Which method of Microsoft Teams call recording you use will determine which licenses you’ll need to acquire to record your Teams calls.

  1. Desktop recording is accomplished by installing a CallCabinet application on the customer’s Teams-enabled PC. This PC runs Teams as a soft-client. Desktop recording only captures conversations on PCs running soft-clients. Desktop recording will not capture Teams-enabled desktop phones (e.g., certain Polycom phones).
  2. Cloud-based recording is achieved by installing a “bot” into the customer’s Azure space. The bot sends all recorded call audio and metadata to the user’s CallCabinet portal, where all recordings will be stored. One advantage of Cloud recording is that it can capture soft-clients and Teams-enabled desktop phones and mobile devices.

The free version of Microsoft Teams is included in every Office 365 license. However, the free version does not include phone calls, making it necessary in some instances to acquire a Microsoft Enterprise licenses (E1, E3, and E5—click here for Microsoft’s breakdown of the differences).
